Corten Steel Pool Fencing & Custom Sun Hoods: Bringing Longfield to Life in Wilsons Creek

Every now and then a project comes along that's just right — and Longfield, tucked into the hills of Wilsons Creek, is one of those. We were stoked to get the call to fabricate the corten steel pool fencing and custom sun hoods for this one, working alongside the design team led by Liam Mulheran (previously at DFJ Architects).

Longfield started life in 1902 as a timber homestead, built from local timber by early settlers on Bundjalung Land. Decades on, it had fallen into disrepair — but underneath the neglect was a house with genuine old-world charm worth saving. The owner Mel Macpherson working with Ben Kena Building and the design team, took on a full restoration: honouring the original scale and form of the homestead while weaving in larger bedrooms, new bathrooms, and a new pavilion linked by a glazed walkway that floods the space with northern light. It's since been shortlisted in the 2026 NSW Regional Architecture Awards — a well-earned nod to a genuinely considered renovation.

Corten Steel Pool Fencing: A Feature, Not an Afterthought

Pool fencing usually has to disappear into the background to do its job. At Longfield, we flipped that — the corten steel fencing was designed to be a feature in the landscape, not something to hide.

Corten's raw, weathered finish suits acreage and country properties in a way polished steel or glass never could. It ages naturally, developing a rustic patina over time that ties straight back into the timber-and-tin character of the original homestead. Practically, it's also low-maintenance and fully compliant with pool safety standards — so it looks the part while doing exactly what it needs to do.

Custom Sun Hoods for the Longfield Journey

Alongside the fencing, we fabricated custom sun hoods for the home — steel-crafted shading designed to shield the pavilion from the harsh Northern Rivers sun and rain while adding to the architectural language of the build. Getting the proportions and finish right so they read as part of the design (rather than a bolt-on) was the end result and all parties are happy with the outcome.

A Project We're Proud to Have Fabricated

Projects like Longfield are why we love this work — old-meets-new renovations where the metalwork has to earn its place in the landscape, not just do a job. Being trusted to deliver both the corten steel pool fencing and the custom sun hoods for a home shortlisted at the 2026 NSW Regional Architecture Awards is a genuine highlight for us.
